Malaysia income tax
If you have just started working or just started a business, two things get confused constantly: your tax file number (TIN) and your MyTax digital access. They are not the same thing, and the order matters.
The short version: your first step is not to register — it is to check whether you already have a TIN.

DuitMap cannot do any of this for you
We explain the process and the terminology. We cannot check an IC number or a TIN, we have no MyTax login form, and we cannot see anyone’s tax account. Every step below happens on HASiL’s official portal.
| Term | What it actually is | Where it is handled |
|---|---|---|
| TIN | The reference number of your tax file. For an individual the file type is IG. | Check or register via e-Daftar |
| PIN / digital certificate | The key that lets you log in to MyTax the first time. Not the TIN. | Apply via e-KYC or e-CP55D |
| MyTax | HASiL’s portal where you actually file, pay and check status. | mytax.hasil.gov.my |
Most people get stuck by trying to log in to MyTax before they have a TIN, or by assuming the TIN is the password. Follow the order: TIN first, digital access second, then e-Filing.
HASiL’s e-Daftar application handles both checking and registering a TIN online, including for the Individual (IG) category. The check exists for a good reason: plenty of people already have a tax file without knowing, especially if a past employer reported their remuneration to HASiL.
If you already have a TIN and try to register again, you waste time and risk confusing your own record. Check first.
Official entry points: the HASiL e-Services list at hasil.gov.my/e-perkhidmatan and the portal at mytax.hasil.gov.my.
If the check shows no existing file, individual registration is done online through e-Daftar.
The thing to understand here is that manual registration is no longer the ordinary route for individuals. HASiL lists manual-registration exemptions only for particular categories — Labuan entities, petroleum income, deceased estates, non-resident public entertainers, and non-resident recipients for withholding tax purposes. Ordinary individuals (IG) are not on that list.
So if you find an older guide telling you to print a form and go to a counter purely to register as an individual, that guide is out of date. The mandatory shift to e-Services began in stages on 1 September 2023, and HASiL stated that counter officers would assist taxpayers in moving to full e-Services use from 1 January 2024. Counters still exist to help — they are just not the default registration path.
Once the TIN exists, you need a PIN or digital certificate to log in to MyTax. HASiL offers two online methods; pick one based on the device you have.
| e-KYC | e-CP55D | |
|---|---|---|
| Device | MyTax mobile app | Desktop or laptop, via the MyTax portal |
| How it verifies you | Matches the photo on your MyKad or passport against a live selfie | Digital certificate registration through the portal |
| Suits you if | You have a smartphone and your MyKad to hand | You prefer a computer, or the phone camera is giving trouble |
Practical tip for e-KYC — since it matches your document photo against a live selfie, do it somewhere well lit, without sunglasses or a hat, with a clean and non-glary MyKad. That is practical advice, not an official HASiL requirement. If matching keeps failing, e-CP55D is the other online method.
The first worthwhile thing is to check and update your profile. Two details cause most of the later trouble:
One exception worth knowing: name and identification-number changes are not made through the ordinary profile update. HASiL routes those through the Customer Feedback Form under Application > Update Taxpayer Details.
This guide covers the ordinary path for a resident individual. Stop and confirm with HASiL if:
Official channels: the HASiL Contact Centre on 03-8911 1000 (9am–5pm, Monday to Friday except public holidays), or the Customer Feedback Form at maklumbalaspelanggan.hasil.gov.my.
“MyTax” and “LHDN” are among the most impersonated names in Malaysian online fraud. A few simple rules:
mytax.hasil.gov.my. An address that is similar but not identical — an extra hyphen, a different spelling, any domain other than .hasil.gov.my — is not it.It is the reference number for your tax file with HASiL (LHDN). For an individual the file type is IG, so the number is written in a form such as IG followed by digits. It identifies your file — it is not a password and not a login credential.
No, and mixing them up is the most common reason people get stuck. The TIN identifies your tax file. To log in to MyTax for the first time you need a separate PIN or digital certificate, obtained through e-KYC or e-CP55D. The order is TIN first, digital access second, e-Filing third.
Not necessarily. Many people already have a tax file without realising, particularly if an employer has reported their remuneration to HASiL. That is exactly why checking is the first step rather than registering. e-Daftar handles both checking and registration.
For an ordinary individual, the counter is no longer the default route. HASiL moved to mandatory e-Services in stages from 1 September 2023, and from 1 January 2024 counter staff assist taxpayers in moving to full e-Services use. Manual registration exemptions are listed for particular categories — Labuan entities, petroleum income, deceased estates, non-resident public entertainers and non-resident recipients for withholding tax — and ordinary individuals are not among them. Counters still exist to help; they are not the registration path.
They are two official online ways to get the PIN or digital certificate that unlocks MyTax. e-KYC runs in the MyTax mobile app and matches the photo on your MyKad or passport against a live selfie. e-CP55D is the desktop route through the MyTax portal. Pick whichever suits the device you have — neither requires sending documents to a third party or paying an intermediary.
No. We explain the process and the terminology only. DuitMap cannot check an IC or TIN, has no MyTax login form, and cannot see anyone’s tax account status. Every step happens on HASiL’s own portal.
