The difference in one sentence
Gross salary is pay before employee deductions; net salary is the take-home amount after those deductions.
Gross salary, net salary and employer cost
| Term | Meaning | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | Pay before employee deductions. | Offer comparison and payroll starting point. |
| Net salary | Take-home pay after employee deductions. | Budgeting, saving and debt planning. |
| Total employer cost | Gross salary plus employer statutory contributions. | Understanding the employer’s full payroll cost. |
Which deductions turn gross salary into net salary?
A common Malaysian payslip subtracts employee EPF, employee SOCSO, employee EIS and PCB. It can also contain zakat through payroll and internal items such as a co-operative, staff-loan or salary-advance deduction. Only employee-side amounts reduce take-home pay.
Employer EPF, SOCSO and EIS are shown separately because they are paid by the employer. They increase total employer cost but should not be subtracted a second time from the employee’s salary.
Example: a RM5,000 headline salary
In a simple January scenario, RM5,000 is the gross salary. After employee EPF of RM550, SOCSO of RM24.75, EIS of RM9.90 and PCB of RM110, estimated net salary is RM4,305.35. Employer contributions are additional and do not raise that take-home figure.
The exact amount is not fixed for everyone on RM5,000. PCB and other deductions change with personal and payroll context. See the step-by-step net salary guide for the full formula.
Which number should you use?
- Comparing job offers: compare gross salary, guaranteed allowances and benefits first, then estimate net salary using the same assumptions.
- Building a monthly budget: use net salary, not the headline package.
- Checking employer cost: add employer contributions to gross salary, but do not treat them as cash received.
- Checking a payslip: compare each employee deduction rather than only looking at the final banked amount.
