Which payments normally count?
Do not look only at gross pay. First identify what each payment is for, because EPF does not treat every earnings line in the same way.

Three examples that explain the difference
RM3,000 salary + RM500 bonus
The bonus is EPF-liable, so the contributable pay for that month is higher than in an ordinary month.
RM3,000 salary + RM500 overtime
The overtime itself is not EPF-liable. EPF still applies to the other liable wages for the month.
RM3,000 salary + RM300 allowance
Check the allowance type. A travelling allowance is excluded, but a driver trip allowance is included.
These examples explain classification only. The actual contribution is determined using the applicable EPF schedule and employee category.
Do not apply the EPF rule to every deduction
Overtime is excluded from EPF, but SOCSO, EIS and PCB use their own definitions and calculations. A payslip can therefore show unchanged EPF alongside a change in another deduction.

What to check on your payslip
- 1. Find the earnings label. Is it salary, overtime, bonus, commission or an allowance?
- 2. Check the allowance purpose. The word “allowance” alone is not enough.
- 3. Separate employee and employer EPF. Only the employee share reduces net pay.
- 4. Ask payroll about unclear labels. Request the wage classification used for EPF.
